Chimney Inspections with a Camera vs Traditional Inspections
At Magic Wand Chimney Services, we will use a camera to perform a comprehensive inspection of your chimney. With a Camera Inspection we can detect problems early to prevent costly repairs or replacements later on. Best of all, it will give you peace of mind, knowing that your chimney is in good condition. After completing an inspection Magic Wand Chimney will provide a written report on the condition of your chimney for you.
A camera inspection is a minimally invasive, cost-effective procedure, causing no damage to your chimney. Unlike traditional inspections, a camera inspection offers several advantages with a more thorough and accurate assessment of its condition. Here are some key benefits:
Early Detection of Fire Hazards:
A camera inspection can reveal hidden dangers like creosote buildup, cracks in the flue lining, or obstructions that could lead to chimney fires. Early detection allows for timely cleaning or repairs, preventing potential fires and keeping your home safe.
Identifying Blockages:
Blockages caused by birds’ nests, debris, or even fallen bricks can be identified through a camera, allowing for safe removal, and ensuring proper ventilation.
Inspection of Entire Flue:
Unlike traditional methods, a camera inspection provides a complete visual inspection of the entire flue liner, from top to bottom. This ensures no hidden issues go unnoticed, promoting optimal chimney performance and draft efficiency.
Accurate Damage Assessment:
Camera footage provides a clear picture of any cracks, spalling (deterioration) of bricks, or other damage within the chimney. This allows homeowners to make informed decisions about repairs or replacements needed.
Documentation for Insurance or Warranty Claims:
Video recordings from the camera inspection can serve as valuable documentation in case of insurance claims related to chimney fires or damage. Additionally, it can be helpful for warranty purposes if repairs are needed.
Creosote Inspection:
Creosote buildup can restrict airflow and reduce heating efficiency. A camera allows for a detailed inspection of creosote buildup, enabling a professional to determine the severity and recommend the appropriate cleaning method.
Level 1 vs Level 2 Chimney Inspections
There are three different levels of inspections for chimneys, but level 1 and level 2 are the most common. A level 1 chimney inspection is used for inspecting chimneys on a basic level and is the minimum requirement for a functioning chimney. An inspector will evaluate the condition of the chimney from easily accessible areas to determine any issues & clean the liner for safe ventilation.
A level 2 chimney inspection is a complicated version of a level 1 inspection and is usually done if: buying or selling a home with a fireplace, recent weather or fire damage, or frequent usage of the fireplace. During this inspection, we examine the chimney as well as any attached areas that keep the chimney structurally sound.
Level 3 chimney inspections are less common due to the nature of needing to inspect the inside by opening up a wall or crawl space to access restricted areas of the chimney or during construction. This is necessary when a chimney needs repairs due to larger problems.
