Chimney Cleaning

Proper Chimney Sweeping is Essential

Chimney Sweeping is the process of inspecting, cleaning, and removing debris from the chimney in order to run smoothly for any wood-burning fireplace. A professional will first briefly examine the chimney for any cracks, brick deterioration, or problems with the flue liner. Afterward, soot and creosote buildup will be removed from the flue. Lastly, any debris that has gotten into the flue will also be removed.

Chimney Sweeping Process

The flue liner is the tube that lines the chimney that vents the smoke from the firebox to the outside. Soot and Creosote build up on the flue after using the fireplace and is recommended to remove the build up after reaching 1/8th of inch thick. In the old days, chimney sweeping would involve climbing the chimney in order to brush off the soot and buildup. Modern chimney sweeping utilizes a long brush rod and/or vacuum with a camera attached to clean and inspect the chimney.

How Often Should a Chimney be Cleaned?

According to the National Fire Protection Association a chimney should be inspected for clearances and soundness at least once a year. A chimney might need to be cleaned more than once a year depending on the type of wood burned & how often the fireplace is used. If you have noticed any issues, or a problem arises during the chimney cleaning, a more thorough inspection with a camera may be recommended.
